Ding dong the blog is dead...

Out of recognition that almost nobody reads here anymore because I let the blog lapse, I think it is time to wrap up Broken Jigsaw Puzzle. But in keeping with my history of playing "musical blogs" I am going to set up a new blog. I have a few reasons for doing this. The main one being I want to do more serious writing. That just wasn't happening on here. And it may not happen on the new blog either, to be honest. But I have been hanging out with writers and trying to make a more concentrated effort to write in a better and more meaningful way. And maybe even due to the fact that I think I have changed a lot as a person over the past year, it just seems the right time. I appreciate all those who have read and offered me so much support here and in my many previous blog incarnations. Thank you for your friendship. I hope you will join me at the new blog. And also tell your friends to stop by because I am starved for readers lol. The name is terrible. I just couldn't find a name because apparently every single possible blog name has already been taken. But given that "strikhedonia" means something along the lines of "the pleasure of saying the hell with everything" and its almost 2010, it seemed an acceptable compromise. And more importantly, the name was available. And then this time next year, I can start another blog with 2011. Or something like that.

Exam is now set up with the instructor and he even found me an office in his department where I can write it and he can pop in to see if I need help. So that takes care of that. About the assignments I still don't know.

Gift cards it will have to be as I just don't have it in me to go out Christmas shopping. Last night the 7 year old daughter of a friend brought over some chocolate cupcakes she baked herself, her mom only helping with the icing. She didn't know if I liked candy canes so so put them on 6 and left 6 plain. It was such a thoughtful gift I thought I would cry. I really wished I could have hugged her.

I am not over the holiday blahs. I have been avoiding my family and friends. Maybe I will get out of this funk in the new year.

Further Update

I am writing the final exam on January 4th or 5th. The rest of my class wrote yesterday morning. Now that we have a date I need to find a suitable room. Classes don't start until the 6th so it shouldn't be a problem. This gives me some time to see how much longer the professor is going to play hardball with the assignment grading question.

In other news I think my gall bladder is all messed up. I feel like complete crap. I am hoping to get in to see my doctor tomorrow.

Part 3

Progress report on the course:

The good news: the professor has agreed to give me an incomplete grade and write the final exam when I am able to. He is being a bit pissy about me giving him an exact day and time I will write it, which at the moment is a bit impossible. But at least that takes care of one issue.

The semi-good news: he is "considering" marking my late assignments for grades. Which is huge step forward from where he was last week. He is still screwing around with me by not coming to a final decision about it. Which I don't really understand but I am going to chalk up to the fact that he and I seem to be engaged in some weird power struggle. I have already decided that if he refuses, I will follow up with the ombudsman for the student's association and look into filing an official complaint. Because even though our agreement on the extensions was verbal, we did have one.

The nasty part: in order to protect myself should I need to file an official complaint (which I really really don't want to do), I am not going to write my final exam until I know what he has decided about the assignments. Once I write the final exam, I will lose any chance to appeal to the Registrar for a late withdrawal. So progress on the exam front, but we are still stuck on different plains of understanding when it comes to the assignments.

About the disability coordinator, I will say that she did finally step up and talk to the professor on Monday. Her reading of the situation is that it was a big miscommunication. And while I agree to a certain extent that might be the case, I am not really comfortable with that. She is now claiming she never got what turns out to be the key email where I told her I wasn't getting the accomodations I had been approved for. And while that would explain a great deal, it doesn't really explain why she never bothered to answer the 5 or so subsequent emails I sent. Sigh. Although the reality is that what happened isn't really the issue of concern right now. More important is the course grade itself. However I may come back and follow up with what happened because I think I fell through a very large crack here. And I shouldn't have. The school has very clear policies about accomodation for disability. And the fact remains I provided my documentation as required and my needs, which all were very reasonable, were not met. Saying it was merely a miscommuncation seems a cop out.

But all that aside, the disability coordinator did initially agree to set up a meeting for this week between herself, the professor, and me. Which I think would have been a good thing. If for no other reason than to educate them both a bit on why these accomodations are needed if I am going to get through my courses. But with -30 temperatures, I couldn't leave my house. So she phoned him on Monday and at least now we are moving forward with some way to get me through the course. Although he is still being more difficult about it than he really needs to be.

Appealing to the Registrar to give me a late withdrawal is still a possibility. I think I have more than enough email proof that I tried to get myself through the course with virtually no support. And in the end, my spinal cord injury just made it impossible to do on my own. Which just sucks but is reality.

In other news I am still undecided on a Christmas tree. And have done no shopping. Or mailing. I suck.

The saga continues

Well....

I tried again today to communicate with the Disability Coordinator by email. She replied by only with platitudes like "oh my, you must be so stressed! Would a trip to the University's counselling services help?" and "I hope you find a solution and it all works out."

WTF????

At this point I completely lost control and wrote back saying if she wasn't willing or able to help me in terms of providing advocacy and helping with accomodations (which is exactly what the University pays her to do--although I wisely left part this out), could she please refer me to somebody who could.

She then wrote back saying she was willing to help all semester but waiting for direction from me.

Again WTF????

She has done nothing but blow me off email after email, all semester long. When she did reply it was never anything helpful or supportive--the reason I ended up appealing to the professor in person.

Anyways after I requested the name of somebody who might help, she suggested if I wanted a late withdrawal I would need to appeal to the Registrar of the University but that he would likely require "substantial medical documentation" before doing so. She then again wished me "good luck."

I looked on the agreement of service that I had signed when I registered with Disability Services and "arranging late course withdraws if necessary" was listed as a service provided. So I wrote her back--being remarkably diplomatic considering I wanted to rip her head off--and suggested I would just refer the Registrar to her regarding medical documentation, since she had personally recieved the 15 page (literally) document that my doctor was required to fill out verifying my disability and how it impacted my enrollment in classes.

Wow, this thinly veiled threat seemed to work magic as within 3 minutes of sending that email I got a reply where she stated at least three times she was here "to support" me. She also wrote how "happy" she was that I wanted her to liasion with the professor and that she would set up a meeting between the three of us for next week if that was what I wanted.

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry about this reply.

I really could write a book, couldn't I? Sigh.

I haven't yet replied to her email. I need a day or so to think about it. Trying to get the late withdrawal would likely be the less headache-prone of my choices. But I don't know how compassionate the Registrar is. I do personally know him, although not very well, as I used to work at the university. He is a generally very nice and laid back guy. He actually was part of a 4 person interview panel for a job interview I had once. I didn't get the job but he praised my interview afterward. But he also worked in a very different capacity at the University back then (coordinator of International Education). Any time I our paths crossed professionally it was a positive interaction. However he is now a big wig with lots of power. And I have never had to deal with him about something so personal. So I don't know how it might all play out.

How the hell do I get myself into these situations? Really.
Pardon my language but my programming professor has completely fucked me over.

After I met with him in his office he told me I could take some extra time to get my assignments done. And stupid me didn't get it in writing.

He has now renegged on this--after I handed in my last 3 assignments. All late but none overly so. He says he will mark them but he "can't" give me a grade. He can. He just won't.

On top of this, the Disability Services Coordinator who tripped over herself to help me in the spring semester is doing dick all to help now. With anything. I couldn't arrange to get a room where I can write my final exam in isolation with a scribe. She has no more appointments open for the rest of the school year. She won't return my emails. And the office staff have treated me like a piece of shit when I have physically gone and tried to find out who might help me. This office is supposed to liason with the instructors about accomodations. I never should have had to go and cry and beg in the first place for extensions. Now I need a late withdrawal from the course or an extension on my final exam, not because of the screwed over assignments, but because I can't go outside because of the weather. But guess who is the only person who can effect this? Yes the Disability Services Coordinator.

I spent up to 7 hours a day on that course. All I have done for the past week is work on my final assignment. And when I asked him why he wouldn't accept it, he said it was because he already went over the assignment in class and posted the answers before I handed it in. In effect, suggesting I cheated. I wasn't at that class and I didn't even know he had the code posted.

I give up. It shouldn't be this hard just to take a stupid class.

Wednesday, December 9, 2009

I managed to make it to the last day of class. Well tomorrow is technically the last day but thankfully the professor cancelled the last lab as we had already covered all the material. Tonight I have just about finished my last assignment for the class. I had 3 to do on Sunday morning and I got them all done. And 1 out of the 3 even works properly! Out of 10 assignments, the last one is the only one that actually worked. And it is also worth less than the others :( But it is all written and tested. All that is left is the documentation. And since I have been working on it most of the day, I am leaving and finishing it in the morning. I checked my grade online and so far, with about 42% of my grade remaining with the 3 assignments to be marked and the final exam, I am sitting at 59%. Which normally would appall me. But right now I am thrilled with that grade. The final is a week from today.

The weather has improved. To -15. Still bitterly cold but at least my windows no longer are sealed shut with an inch of ice.

I am exhausted. Good riddance once this course is done.

Sunday, December 6, 2009

It is minus 30 celcius here and not expected to warm up before Friday at the earliest. Which means I likely will not be going to school next week. Or anywhere else. Sigh.

I have an enormous pile of overdue assignments. But after weeks of being very unproductive due to some fatigue and concentration issues, I am finally getting stuff done today. I finished off one assignment that was half done (overdue #1). I am now about 75% through another assignment (overdue #2). Then I have to start a third assignment that is due tomorrow. This class has had a ridiculous amount of work. Or else I am just very slow lol. Maybe a combination of both. The good news is I am finally understanding things today. Which I really wasn't before. Progress!

The downside is that the code I am writing isn't really doing what it is supposed to. Not good.

About the LSAT: I am waiting to hear if there is a re-write date or if I have to wait until the next sitting in February. If it is the latter, I doubt I will write it. After getting thumped in this programming course, I no longer have much interest or desire in law school. But studying for the LSAT was a good experience. It might help me elsewhere.

Saturday, December 5, 2009

I was supposed to write the LSAT today. But I freak storm yesterday dumped a foot of snow, the roads are undriveable, and the temperatures too low to risk me going outside.

No LSAT :(

Friday, December 4, 2009

I gave a class presentation yesterday. I was very nervous but it went pretty good. Several people told me it was the best out of the whole class. I thought yesterday was the last day of classes and had been slacking. Apparenty the last day isn't until December 10. Oops.

Went to Zoolights on Wednesday :-)

Sunday, November 29, 2009

So I do continue to feel bad about the bird's nest in my van's engine. My dad cleaned it out and there was no signs the bird that built it ever used it. But still...

It is Grey Cup Sunday in Canada. Which is like the equal, albeit on a much much much smaller scale of Super Bowl Sunday. But still, apparently, a reason for a national drinking party. Which I don't quite get why people who care nothing about football suddenly get excited over one game. But oh well. My dad was having a few people over to watch the game but I declined the invite. I am tired and grumpy today. And trying to get caught up on 3 assignments. One more week of classes. Then the final. And likely an F. Thursday was the withdraw date. Why didn't I withdraw?

In other news, I looked at a spanking red TV at a store the other day while I was loitering, waiting on the pharmacists to fix my messed up order. We had a small argument about it and now I am looking for a new pharmacy as this is like the 100th mess up in the past year. But more than that, I thought she was unnecessarily rude to me. The drama never ends. I gave this pharmacy another chance after briefly going to Walmart then feeling guilty for being pumping more money into Walmart at the expense of an independent local store. But I think I will go back to Walmart. Anyways I am sidetracked here--because I am still mad at the pharmacist and can't let it go, apparently--but I saw a pretty, bright RED tv and since my current bedroom TV is on the fritz and I am depressed and buying something will misguidedly cheer me up momentarily, I am going to get the TV tomorrow I have decided.

Crazy!

Found under the hood of my van this morning. Considering it gets driven nearly every day when I go to school and just took me 1300 km roudtrip 2 weekends ago I went to my cousin's wedding, it is amazing there hasn't been a fire.

Sunday, November 22, 2009

School continues to consume all my time and has me on the verge of a meltdown most days it seems. 2 more weeks of classes then the final. I joked to a friend today in an email that next semester I won't be taking anything related to programming but instead will enroll in something like the history of furniture--which is a course that is offered. He cautioned me that the mixing of furniture eras might be intense. So I am now unsure what to enroll in. I really must find myself a program to register in as academic drifting, as appealing as it seemed at the beginning of this semester, is clearly not working for me. Since I enjoyed my art history course in the spring so much--and more importantly it didn't break my brain as my attempts to learn C++ is doing--I think I will just go back to that for the winter term.

I have had a difficult time getting the accomodations I require. Something that has me confused as in the spring it was no issue. I suspect the Accessibility Office is understaffed and therefore I might not be the only one falling through the cracks. But the lack of support has made this semester much more difficult than it needed to be. Finally after realizing I was either going to have to withdraw the course or risk a very real chance of getting an F, I decided to go see the professor. Which was not an easy decision as I have found him somewhat difficult to deal with. I had sent him a few emails earlier in the semester explaining that I was falling behind and wondering if there was a way to salvage the course. He replied to them all, but somewhat in a somewhat bizarre fashion, managed to always ignore my concerns and reply about things that had nothing to do with what I had just written.

But last week, I finally decided to go and see him in his office and appeal to him for some brief extensions. And while I admit that I am a terrible slacker and in the past have possibly abused the goodwill of extensions granted to me, in this case I honestly required them. I have been working my butt off in the course. And I have never gotten such bad greats for such a big effort lol. My meeting with the prog turned out to be a good thing, although it nearly turned into a disaster when I broke down and started crying. I think he was so appalled that he would have agreed to any accomodations or extensions just to get me to stop. Or to get me out of his office :/ We did come to an agreement, although he did try to encourage me to withdraw and try the course again next semester, but told me I could continue to come to class and get help from him. I haven't yet decided what to do. But for now I am going to continue. He is a good guy and I have to take back some cursing I did about him when he didn't seem to be understanding my emails. I think I just had to go make the connection in person. I should have done it earlier in the semester. I may not be sitting at 52% if I had. Oh well.

I am not very good at keeping this updated, again....

No much exciting going on. About 3 more weeks of classes then I will have some free time to procrastinate with again.

Today my cat ate half a chicken ceasar salad when nobody was looking.

This weekend I went away on a female retreat thing. Long story but my sister and I went along with 10 other women. I have never done anything like this before. And I won't again. I don't know if there is something wrong with me but I really just don't do the whole female bonding thing well. Frankly, I spent most of the weekend annoyed at everybody. One thing that struck me is that most of the participants (married with an average of two children) spent most of the weekend talking about how relaxing it was to get a break from their husbands and children. They look forward to these two weekends (the retreats are held in the spring and fall) as a massive escape/chance to relax/take a break from their everyday lives. And maybe because having a husband and children are foreign concepts to me, I can't truly understand. But I can say it made me relieved that I don't have said husband or children.

Not to be all negative, there were good things about the weekend. We stayed at a lovely bed and breakfast in the mountains and it was mostly accessible for me. The food was good. There was booze. But I honestly felt like I was 13 again and at a slumber party. I don't want to go to another one of these retreats and watch chick flicks, talk about sex, eat chocolate, get a pedicure. I can't handle it lol.

I wonder if I should be kicked out of the sisterhood of being a woman?

My programming course is consuming all my time. Thankfully only about 6 weeks left. I must be a sadist or something because I registered for the second part of the course for the January semester.

Did I say I was going to post more? And then I didn't :(

We got hit with some very cold weather and that seemed to sap my already sagging energy. I am not sure why I am so tired but it seems that is my chronic way of being lately. Although to be fair, lots has been going on, with all the travelling I did, some health stuff, going back to school, moving into the condo, moving out of the condo, moving back into the condo. I think I am just worn out. And the bitter cold weather didn't help.

It's warmer now but winter is for sure on its way :(

I don't yet really have any pictures of my condo, mostly because it doesn't feel yet like my home. I was telling a friend in an email today that I felt like I was living in a fancy hotel. Not so much because of the interior of my unit, which is far from fancy lol. But the hallways, with the mirrored elevator and fancy furniture, makes it feel that way to me. Perhaps it will pass. But I don't know.

It's also a bit weird living in a place where everybody is my grandparent's age. I don't want to come off as ageist here so I want to point out that I don't have anything against living in a "plus 55 building" (what a term!) but I definately feel out of place. But the reality is, at least in the part of the building I live in, I think it's more like "plus 75." It's also been very awkward because, well because of just how things are for me. Everybody is nice here, wants to help anyway they can, many have shown concern for me when they see me in the hallway--if I am feeling okay, if I am warm enough, if I am comfortable, if I need anything. It's all very sweet. But makes me feel so very self conscious. I am guessing it might settle down after I have lived her for some time. But for now, I am definately a novelty. It's not a great feeling.

Sunday, October 11, 2009

I wish I could post more, write more. But I am just very tired overall, it seems. I am busy with school. I dropped down to one class from two but it's tiring. Although I like it. I am finally moved into my new condo. I'll try to update more often.

Sunday, September 20, 2009

sorry I am way far behind again on replying to comments left on here and emails and even phone calls. Just a crazy couple of weeks. Like riding a roller coaster drunk or something. I am doing okay. Good and bad days but doing okay. I hope everybody is doing okay too.

I made it to Vancouver in one piece. It's far from easy or routine but there were not major disasters before, during, or after the flight itself. I still really hate flying but I guess I am becoming a pro by now. Not really but this time things went as good as could be hoped for.

The flight was less than an hour but we got to the hotel very late. With the exception of a few weeks in August and the beginning of this month, I have been on the road since the end of June. I will be happy when its over and I can just be home for some time without thinking ahead to travelling, which while I am greatful I can do it, is exhausting and stressful.

I slept last night. No Wikipedia or Farmville.

Wednesday, September 9, 2009

I ate Lucky Charms for breakfast. For the first time since I was probably 10 years old. It made me smile. It's a very happy cereal.
Off to Vancouver today for the next 3 weeks. I hate flying :(

today's thoughts

I wish it wasn't so hard at times to find the necessary day to day motivation. Ebb and flow, I suppose.

There seems to be a fine line for me between laziness and depression when it comes to be motivated. Maybe its also somewhat of a self-esteem or confidence issue. I don't know.

I was really hurt this week after making an effort, following something of a absence on my part, to reach out to somebody I care about. I wasn't so much rejected as left unacknowledged. Which I think felt worse. But then I considered the reaction possibly had nothing to do with me; something was going on in their life at the moment that led to the response I did receive. This theory didn't take away the sting but did leave me trying to convince myself that it really didn't matter because in the grand scheme of things, this person probably didn't realize how much it hurt me.

Self-delusion really is a safety preserver, isn't it?
I couldn't sleep last night. Much like my days, I wasted the awake night doing nothing productive even though I actually have a lot of things I need to get done.

But instead of doing them, or sleeping, I spent part of the night randomly reading Wikipedia articles. Among the things I learned about last night:

1. H-Dagen: which was the day (September 3, 1967) that Sweden switched from driving on the left side of the road to the right. The process of how this shift was handled was honestly fascinating to me in the middle of the night lol.

2. From there I followed a link to an article about the introduction of standardized EU traffic signs and why this has been frought with opposition in some local jurisdiction.

3. Had all my questions about marshmellows answered

4. Back to my traffic theme, I read about speed limits

5. A link from the speed limit. article launched me to one about Isle of Man. I think I would like to visit there one day.

6. I took a break to harvest crops in my farmville game, after a year long banning of myself from facebook I joined again just so I could play this game. I also find myself addicted to Mafia Wars but didn't play that last night.

7. I read an email from my sister and looked at some pictures she sent of her kids' messy bedrooms. No pictures of the kids, just their rooms lol.Her tone in the email was one of outrage.

8. Back to wikipedia to find out if Canadians have always driven on the right. Answer; no. Until the mid 1920s, some provinces drove on the left, others on the right. Then the fedreal government mandated everybody must drive on the right. However in Newfoundland they continued to drive on the left until 1949. There was a confusing paragraph that said on one freeway in Montreal traffic does drive on the left hand side of the road. But the wording was very convulted and awkward. So tonight I will have to research this road and find out if that really is the case.

9. Had a break to watch an old episode of the Rocky and Bullwinkle show on the Teletoon Retro channel. At some point during that half hour, I finally fell asleep.

So that was my night. I learned a lot.

Monday, September 7, 2009

I just got back from my second movie in as many days. I am a social butterfly lol. Well I am zero for two as The Time Traveller's Wife was not much better than Naked Basterds. It was not terrible, maybe 6 out 10. I was even able to suspend belief and sort of buy the premise of the time travelling. But the ending...spoiler alert, don't read further if you want to see the movie or read the book without me blabbing the ending to you...

So when he travels in time, the time traveller always arrives at his destination naked because he can't bring the clothes he was wearing with him. But at the end he gets shot when he is time travelling he manages to take the bullet with him to his next destination and dies there. How is this possible? Why is it he can't take clothes but he can take the bullet with him. And since he was shot in the future, how can he go back and then die of that wound in the past?

This bothers me and ruined the whole movie for me. If anybody has seen it, please share your thoughts on it and tell me if the ending didn't seem to follow logic (however unlogical the logic) that the movie had sort of been successfully building. Also if anybody has read the book (which I have but am undecided if I want to read it now), is it better than the movie?

Such important things to concern myself with lol.

Sunday, September 6, 2009

I just got back from Inglorious Basterds. This was the default choice as one person I was with wanted to see Final Destination. The other wanted to see The Time Traveller's Wife and I wanted to see Harry Potter. None of those movies were starting close to the time we got to the theatre, so Inglorious Basterds it was.

It was terrible and not even the good terrible when a movie is so bad it is good.

But it was a night out with friends and that is always nice. I had to be guilted into coming out and pretty much drug out of the front door. But I am glad I went.

today

today

We had very nice weather for part of the long weekend but its nasty today. Overcast, windy, cold.

I went to Starbucks for a bit but it was too cold on the patio to stay long. Unfortunately my favorite Starbucks is also among the smallest one in Calgary. I don't exactly "fit" well inside the narrow, L shaped store. So I just came home once it got very windy. But before I left I got to watch a dog obedience class running drills on the sidewalk in front of me. There is a very high end dog supplies/pampering store across the street and they run the classes. It was a puppy class and I am guessing this must have been day one because chaos reigned. From the little bit I saw, some of the people have their work cut out for them. I wish I had a dog. I love my cats but I really want a dog.

I have been staying out in Bragg Creek at my parents' house. We came in the city today so my mom could help out my sister in law with a few things as my brother is away on a business trip. We went out to the park for a bit before dropping the boys and my dad off at the leisure centre. We will see how high his blood pressure is when they get back. He is not a big fan of the water. But both boys have been in swimming lessons this summer and at even though the little one is not quite two yet, he loves the water. I had one of those moments when I really wanted to go with them and almost wanted to cry because I couldn't. Those moments are a lot less than they used to be. But when they hit, they hurt a lot.

The cat rescue society brought by traps but so far no luck. I think the kittens are too smart.

I am getting ready to leave for Vancouver again. Not so thrilled about travelling again and this time I am flying. But I suppose it will be fine. By the time I get back I should be able to move into my condo (again). So looking forward to that. So far things have been mostly civil and we have even had some fun movie nights and the like but I think for my sake and my parents' sake, it's better that we all don't live together.

Oh and about the robot, apparently it is not really life sized (he exaggerated) but yes my brother bought a robot. They have been away for the past week so I haven't seen it yet. But my mom has. She just shook her head when I asked her about it. lol I can't wait to see it. Pictures to follow when I do.

I started school on Thursday. I am at a bit of loose ends academically because I don't have any idea what I want to do. Last year at this time I was sure I wanted to do a MA connected to writing, creative or otherwise. Then I fell in love with my art history course in the spring and wondered about pursuing more courses in that field. But the truth is I just don't know what I want to do and that is a problem. Not a problrm worthy of complaining of. But I guess my point is I am finding it hard to be focused or motivated when I have no clear goal in sight. Or even in mind. I learned from initially auditing my course in the spring that I don't do well if there are no expectations on me or no tangible end goal such as a grade. So for now I am reconsidering my initial course choices and thinking what it is I want to get from going back to school.

I have a friend currently studying for the LSAT. She tells me I should think about it. My first thought was to laugh. My second thought was would it hurt to do a practice test just to see how I do at this point in my life? I might take up her offer to do a test from her study kit.

Other than that its been a wasted week. I aqm spinning my wheels (poor choice of a metaphor) more right now than I have at any point in the past 3.5 plus years. I do nothing all day and when something comes up to do, laziness or depression or anxiety causes me to stick my head in the sand in avoidance. I am frustrated but don't have the desire or energy it seems to do anything about the fact that my life is slipping by one day at a time while I sit and wish things were different.

Feeling hopeless really is hard to pull out of.
I can't edit my last post. I wanted to add this line:

I wonder why it is some regrets seem so hard to let go of?

Although I am not sure knowing why would help to let go. Just thinking out loud as my weekly crisis hits a crescendo.
I read a quote one time by somebody I don't remember. It said that regret is a useless emotion. I think I agree. I spend far too much energy thinking of all the regrets in my life. But useless or not, I also find regret is impossible to let go. For me anyways.

I am supposed to start school tomorrow, leave for Vancouver for a few weeks shortly thereafter, and on top of that I am trying to rescue some kittens dumped on my parents' property.

I am so tired.

speechless

I was snooping around my oldest brother's facebook page today (I deactivated my account months ago so was using my cousin's account, at her urging). Apparently (according to a conversation I read on his wall) he just spent $39000 on a life sized transformer--not of the electrical type but of the comic book/movie kind.

What?

Now at first I thought he must have left out a decimal point and he meant it was $390.00. But in reply to a comment somebody else made, he wrote that he "would be paying it off over more than a few months." And since he makes a very comfortable living, I am going to assume that $400 wouldn't break his budget and require a long pay off schedule. Can he really have spent that much? Not to be judgemental--and I am sure his 8 year old son will be tickled pink with the giant robot--who pays that much for something like that? And what will they do with it?

Of course it's his money to do with what he pleases but all I can say is wow. Wow. Wow.

Prior to my injury I was working full time doing IT support and my yearly salary wasn't more than the robot. Apparently I was in the wrong line of work....

Crazy.

I am going to post pictures here when I see it. And I am not sure I believe him until I actually see it.

I'm getting a tattoo Friday of a little bird. I got a medical letter of clearance today that the tattoo place demanded. It was reluctantly given to me. But now I am good to go.

Yay I am so happy friends are still reading my recently neglected blog. I have been sort of neglectful of maintaining friendships this summer as well, due to my lack of internet access. But--I do have to say the flip side of no internet is that I have cut down my wasteful hours of surfing and have been doing things like reading books again. But I have missed everybody and hope I will be better now at staying in touch here and by email.

I hope everybody has had a nice summer so far.

Some pictures

I have had no internet access for most of time in BC. Which made updating difficult once I wanted to start writing again after I got over the funk I was in. I probably have no more readers left though. Hopefully somebody is still checking once in a while. Here are a few pictures.

sorry for the lack of replies and lack of posts on here and also lack of keeping up with my emails. I think I am depressed.

Sunday, July 5, 2009

Sorry for the infrequent blog updates. I am just finding it really hard right now to stay up to date with anything online, this blog and email and other things. I hope everybody is doing well. I will try to relink my Twitter account again to my blog as that is really much easier to update and stay in touch with people right now. Not lack of interest keeping me from wrting and updating. Just lack of time and energy

Down Day

After being on the goal for what feels like ever today is a down day to get caught up on some rest. And maybe tomorrow to. This is ok though. Next week I have some more appointments of various kinds then will be leaving for Vancouver Island until some time in August. For now I am not exactly sure how long as that will depend how things go with my caregiving entourage including one person I hired ho is travelling with us and two people I have hired in Tofino. Could be a disaster but it might work out.

Friday, June 26, 2009

Yesterday was nice. I met an old friend and her baby at the aquarium. Then went and had bubble tea at a funky little cafe with a patio looking out over the water. Today I have an appointment but hope to go to Jericho Beach tonight.

Thanks for the all the book suggestions! I appreciate it.

Vancouver is nice, if a little rainy for my liking. I haven't been writing much mosly because travelling has taken a lot out of me. We are here for a bit so I should have time to recover and post more soon. I hope everybody is doing okay.

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

After a few days of relaxation beside Shuswap Lake, or Lake Shuswap, I have seen it referred to both ways, it is back on the road later today. I am trying to find a map on google that will show where I am.

It has been beautiful here. Shuswap Lake is another of the many places that I just drove by in the past on my way to somewhere else without really giving a second thought to other than "oh that is nice." It really is beautiful here. Yesterday when the rain finally broke we took a small tour of sorts of a town known as the "house boat capital of Canada." "Tour" meaning exploring a fairly nice path that wound alongside the lake, presumably for golf carts which I was told is the preferred mode of transportation for many of the people who live in the boats. Something I found a little bizarre but also charming in an offbeat way.

I was kind of blue yesterday for some reason. I don't know why. I finished Lamb. Very funny. Like reading a book written by Monty Python. Actually I think parts of this book were pretty much stolen right out of both The Holy Grail and The Life of Brian. I am intruiged by Christopher Moore and want to read more but have decided he is not the kind of author I can read back to back books from. So I am taking a break with re-reading Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. I don't usually read books a second time. But I recently edited a paper for a friend who was presenting a paper on this book at a conference (that sounds more impressive than it actually is, he asked me to edit for spelling, etc. simply because I am the only person he knows who has actually read this book before. Anyways his paper got me interested in this book again, which I last read what feels like a lifetime ago. I am in dire need of reading suggestions as I have lots of time to fill this summer. So I would appreciate if anybody has any.

Photos

So apparently I didn't figure out posting pictures from the blackberry, as I thought I did. Will try again today.

Sunday, June 21, 2009

Figured out finally how to post a picture to here from a black berry. It finally cleared up in the late afternoon so we could enjoy the lake

Great Book

It's been raining all day so I haven't been able to get out to the lake and sight see or people watch. But I am reading a totally awesome book I just have to recommend. I am not a huge fan of absurdist literature but I am loving this book. I can't believe I never heard of Christopher Moore before. I will have to read more. I think this book appealed to the blasphemer in me.

The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal

The birth of Jesus has been well chronicled, as have his glorious teachings, acts, and divine sacrifice after his thirtieth birthday. But no one knows about the early life of the Son of God, the missing years -- except Biff, the Messiahs best bud, who has been resurrected to tell the story in the divinely hilarious yet heartfelt work "reminiscent of Vonnegut and Douglas Adams" (Philadelphia Inquirer).

And I just checked my email and found out my grade in my art history course was A-. I don't know if I mentioned it on here as I haven't written much but a few classes in I decided to switch from audit status to taking the course for a grade. That was one reason I haven't been online much as this course required a lot of my time and energy. Much more than I expected. Two reasons for the switch. The first is that I found I wasn't really motivated to do the required readings when nothing was expected of me. The second is with my unexpected love of art history and wanting to take more courses in the subject, I figured it was best to get a solid foundation in how to write a paper and exam with an introductory level course. In the end I got a lot more out of the course as a whole by taking the course for a grade. The instructor was great and let me write the final exam early due to me leaving Calgary. It was supposed to be this coming Wednesday. I didn't expect a final grade so quick.

And finally happy father's day to all the fathers out there.

Sun?

I got up very very early so I could watch the sun rise over Lake Shuswap. Found a perfect viewing spot. Too bad its massively overcast and the sun shows no signs of making an appearance. Oh well, maybe tomorrow morning.

Its a non travel day so I will try to get caught up with a longer post and some pictures. Also I might manage to get caught up on some emails. I have never stayed in this part of BC for any length of time before, always just drove through it on my way elsewhere. I have been missing a lot. It makes me a bit sad but its nice to be here now.

Saturday, June 20, 2009

Spending the next few days near the shores of Lake Shuswap in BC. Its so lovely. I think I could stay here forever

I overcame my fears and went sailing on a little boat yesterday. Finally leaving for Vancouver today. More later. I am behind on picture posting.

John glad you liked Mr. Toad :) I will be in touch about Oregon :)

Saw this little guy while out in a park today.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009

I have been out and about more now that it is nicer so not around much to post as much as I like. But I finally replaced my busted old cell phone with a Blackberry Bold so it has been coming with me when I am out to get pictures and hopefully make blogging easier from remote locations. I finally figured out posterous a little better and hope to be using that more once I get a new blog set up on wordpress and link it with posterous. For now this is where I went tonight. The better pictures are on a camera card so hopefully I can post them tonight. Elbow Falls is fully accessible with a nice paved path that runs over and alongside the falls. Unfortunately it is possibly the most popular picnic area in Kananaskis Country and so is often jam packed with people, even in winter as it gets very little snow and makes a nice family outing fairly close to the city. We made a impromptu decision to go out there tonight when the friend I intended to go to name that tune with decided she really wasn't into it. And I was relieved because I kind of wanted to go outside instead of be in a bar as well. So at 6 pm we fled the city and were quite surprised to find the place essentially empty once we got out there. One thing I saw that I really wish I had taken a picture of but didn't think of was we saw a porsche parked in one of the disabled spots...even though only 3 of the other 200 parking spots were full. And not only that, it was straddling 2 of the 3 disabled spots. I am not militant about parking because frankly I can't be bothered to care if people abuse the spots...it is usually more trouble than it is worth to worry about. I am beat but happy. I was really beautiful. One slight near disaster was forgetting to check how much gas was in the van and realizing 20 km outside of town we had no gas....and not sure if one of the two gas stations in Bragg Creek were open past 8 pm...which was necessary if we were then to get back to Calgary from Bragg Creek. My parents live just outside Bragg Creek so we would have potentially had a rescue but I suspect it would have led to a bad scene when I told them we ran out of gas. We eventually made it to the gas station with a full 10 minutes to spare with the low fuel light on. It was kind of thrilling in a very stressful kind of way, I admit. First to see if we would actually get into town and second if the gas station was still open. But we did so all's well.

song that is in my head today:

Stayed up most of the night writing a paper for my course and I managed to get the damn thing done. Just a short book review and the final exam in 2 weeks and I will be done. Today is a bonus: no snow like there was yesterday morning. I am contemplating a indulgent trip to Lake Louise as the crowds are still manageable and I have beome addicted to the $9 cups of chai at the chateau. But since I am working on very little sleep I might put this off for another day. Have a good sunday everyone

Saturday, June 6, 2009

Random thought for the day: Even though I dislike country music I realized today I like Corb Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans (needs a new name for his band). And this is the song that made me a fan. So much a fan that I downloaded the cd from iTunes. And it's all just songs about horses. How cool is that? lol I love it!

I needed to go back and answer some blog comments but am disorganized to do so again. Off the top of my head, I am hoping the little patio I didn't know the condo had can be useful. As of right now there is no way for me to actually get out of the condo to use it (although I could access it from outside). So one renovation is to change the door that leads to it. I think it can be done but I don't know for sure.

Colour scheme I am not sure. Right now its pretty bland and not at all cheerful. Nice just not very interesting. I think I won't get around to even thinking about painting until the fall though. But since I don't anticipate being back in Calgary until late August or early September the summer seems the best time to get the renovations done with no disruptions.

As for my trip to the US, I have not fully worked that out yet. Washington state for sure. Oregon would be nice. Montana on the way home, possibly, depending on the route taken. I am still trying to figure out if such a trip is doable. More details here as I figure stuff out.
I haven't been online much. Lots going on, both good and not so good. But mostly good.

My offer on the condo has been accepted. It is looking like I won't be able to take possession until early August. Which actually isn't bad because I have some other news that is kind of big: I am spending ther summer in Tofino. Or at least some of it. I rented a place for July and August. Not fully accessible but it will do. There is a ton of stuff to do around that. I will be spending some time in Vancouver first, partially to do some things I had planned last fall. Biggest thing is finding caregivers since this will be a solo trip of sorts. My parents are coming but will not be there the whole time. They are not fully convinced this is going to work out but we will see.

Other things: finishing my course, figuring out what renovations I need to make to the condo (not many I think), packing, finding one more caregiver in Tofino, planning a trip to the US in August. Busy.

Condo Part IV

The condo association has waived me needing to meet with them based on references from the rental company I am currently with. So the offer was put in today. Made me a little queazy to think of how much money it will be but that's okay. You can't take it with you when you die so I might as well spend it now to give myself the security renting does not have. Hopefully they accept it.

John yes the cats will enjoy the sun room :) there is even a small cement patio off the living room which isn't on the floor plans. Since this unit is on the ground floor I will have that.

Bee bee, yes to painting it my own colours :) I am already thinking what I want to do with the place, which is quite dull now in terms of paint. I think it will be a good place to live and yes friendly, quiet neighbours. Hopefully.

Seth, yes in Garrison Woods.

Nathan, thanks!

Condo Part III

Upon reflection I am not feeling so negative about the condo being in a 55+ building. It's big and nice and really well set up and suited for me. I wasn't thrilled when I saw the floor plan but it's laid out in a way that I need and I like. I will be comfortable there. I could even see myself being happy there.

Let's hope now that my offer gets accepted. It's an outrageous amount of money and that makes me nervous. But will be worth it and give me a sense of security that I don't have renting.

Stay tuned...Condo part IV might be coming this evening as I continue to ponder lol

We couldn't get any pictures of the inside because the couple vacating it made some objections. They were so unpleasant (the relator was cringing afterward as they were not expected to be home for the showing). They are moving to Ontario to be near their grandchildren...the condo went on the market last week and my mom's friend who works real estate called her with the tip...which I am glad about. But I am heading to Starbucks in a bit and will see about getting some exterior shots.

Condo Part II

I went and looked at the condo.

Pluses:

1. It's very spacious, even more than the floor plans would indicate. And there is the possibility to making some modifications to further make it more open and easier for me to get around in. It would be a big improvement over my current apartment in that regard. Plus it would be mine...no more hassles with the pain in the ass company that manages the complex where I live.

2. It's centrally located but in a newer community. The neighbourhood was rebuilt from scratch about 7 years ago on land that used to be part of the no closed army base. It was designed to be pedestrian and bike friendly so is full of paved paths. Tons of green space and several large parks. The condo building is a block away from my favorite starbucks and within easy walking distance of a grocery store, pharmacy, movie rental place, and several other funky little coffee shops and places to eat. And not far from where I live now (a 5 minute drive) so I would still be close to my beloved North Glenmore Park and to school. I like this part of the city and if I was going to buy it would preferably be in this general area so this works out good.

3. While the unit is totally self-contained, there are a number of services in the building I could access that would make life much easier for me such as laundry and meals, plus some medical related things. Again it depresses the hell out of me that I need these things but such is life I guess. The unit, building, and neighbourhood are all very nice and very accessible. I doubt I would find a more accessible neighbourhood in Calgary.

It really is ideal for me and I am going to put in an offer on it.

So why am I so depressed? :(

Condo

I am going to look at a condo today. If I like it I will be putting in an offer to buy it.

This is the floor plan of the unit I will be looking at. I am curious as to why if Canada uses the metric system the units of measurement are in square feet. Because they did nothing but confuse me (I am not mathematically inclined enough to convert even roughly in my head). Then I realized something: Canada didn't officially adopt the metric system until sometime in the early 1980s. And since the target age for those being sold units in this building would have been educated before that, I suppose they are sticking with something familiar. Yes...it's a retirement condo independent living thing building I am looking at :( Something that depresses the hell out of me but it has lots of things that would make my life easier and even take some of the burden off my family, both things that I want. I realize I sound ageist here and I don't mean to. It's just not the kind of a place I pictured myself living at 28. And the fact that everybody else is 30+ years or more older than me isn't even the thing that bothers me the most. It's a very very nice building. It's marketed as something silly as "enjoy your golden years in the luxury you deserve." And while I am all for having a nice place to live, I am just having a hard time picturing myself living here.

But I am tired of renting. And my initial plans to build a house west of Calgary are not really feasible given care giving needs and the hassle of finding enough coverage living right in the city. Moving somewhere that would require a drive out of the city would likely shrink my pool of paid care givers even smaller than it is now. So we will see how it goes with the condo. Apparently they will sell to me due to having a disability but since I am not 55 or older I have to get special permission and go before some board. Something that also makes me feel pretty shitty. Even to arrange a viewing took some special arranging. Sigh.

But still, it would be a very good thing for me to have a place that is my own.

Susan Boyle

I was late to this story but I love her and can't stop watching this video.

Plus she lives with a cat...which means I would have liked her anyway :) Too bad she didn't win but I guess she will probably do just fine anyway. I hope so anyway.

I have become addicted to Posterous because you can just email something and Posterous automatically makes it a blog post. Its not functional enough to move my entire blog to. Something to watch :)

Lets see if this will work. Among the things we saw while visiting Peter Lougheed Provincial Park on Sunday...a park which in my opinion should be a national park. But then maybe it would get too popular and be too crowded like Banff. On Sunday we saw virtually no people at all, even at the very beautiful visitor centre. We did see big horn sheep, mountain goats, deer, moose, pikas, and various birds. Anyways a very beautiful place about a 40 minute drive west of Calgary. I have a few more videos but you tube seems to be slow processing them tonight. The sheep were as close to us as they look. Pretty amazing but not uncommon in this place. Surprisingly we didn't spot any elk this time.

Friday, May 22, 2009

We are trying to take an impromptu trip to Banff today to show some sites to my cousin visiting from Halifax. We were planning on leaving by 9 am. It's now 11 am. One possibility was going to tour the Columbia Icefields who to my surprise have accessible "glacier coaches." In my hiking days I would have rolled my eye at people who pay to ride a bus to a glacier. But I guess things change. We need to leave in the next 30 minutes if we are to make it the glacier tour launching spot in time. I suspect we won't make it and will end up somewhere else in Banff. My mom suggested a boat tour but I am not so comfortable with that. Something about the boat sinking and me going down with it...unlikely but enough that I have vetoed her suggestion. She is disappointed but I am not budging. One thing for sure, we will end up in one of the 5 candy shops on mainstreet Banff :)

Thursday, May 21, 2009

I drank plain black coffee for the first time yesterday and to my great surprise I didn't hate it. It's usually a case that I have a tiny bit of coffee with a cup of cream and 12 teaspoons of sugar. And then I wonder why I feel sick after I drink "coffee." Anyways my new plan is to just drink my coffee black from now on. My brother has bet me $10 that I will not last 5 days.

School is going good. Other than the logistical nightmare of getting me out the door on time and finding someone who can come with me. But we are working on that and so far I haven't missed any of my classes. I am loving it. I have gone ahead and registered for another art history course for September already.

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

Wow I didn't realize it had been a week since I was last on here. I have been very busy with my class and a few other things (like finishing the crack laced Twilight books) that I have neglected my blog.

I haven't moved the blog yet. Haven't even looked into it yet actually. But I did figure out the blog thing for Twitter....which I momentarily linked to here but removed when it was causing sign in issues for a few people. So here is my experiment on there with a post today.

http://amanda-u7z6w.posterous.com/

I am moving this blog to word press soon. And I am going to post some art pictures because I am loving my class. I hope everybody is doing okay :)

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

I haven't been posting much because I am still crazy tired all the time. But here's something good: I am auditing a art history course. Its the best of both worlds. I get to learn everything but don't have to do any papers or exams. I have wanted to take an art history course for a long time. Never seemed to have the time to fit it into my academic schedule. So now I can. It's a course that covers from about 1920 to the late 1970s. Should be very good. One interesting thing to me is that it isn't just paintings and sculptures but also covers photography and architecture. So I am quite excited.

By the way I hate this blog and am going to move back to Wordpress. No doubt I will loose even more readers than I already have in my previous switches. Its just been non-stop problems for some people to leave comments and the control panel interface is crap.

Saturday, May 9, 2009

I wanted to write something about a family friend who passed away this week. This is sort of a depersonalized version that I posted on a public forum. I deliberately left out names because of that. I want to post a more personal version on the blog, where some of my readers will actually know the people I am writing about. That will come. For now here is the public version.

Yesterday I went to the funeral of a family friend who sadly passed away unexpectedly early in the week.

Until about 2 years ago I had very little experience with death. Of course I had been exposed to it. People I knew died. But with maybe the exception of my great grandmother and a friend who committed suicide, both who passed away when I was 22, I hadn't really lost anybody that I was very close to. In the past 2 years that has changed and I have lost a number of people I have loved dearly. After not having to deal with death for 26 years, all of a sudden it seemed to be all around me. I can't really explain this feeling but after losing 2 of my grandparents, 3 friends to accidents and another friend to suicide within the span of just over a year, I fell into an almost obsessive fear of who in my life might die next. It was not so much that I was obsessed with death. Rather it was more of the very difficult realization that people I loved were actually going to die at some point. Maybe it sounds stupid that I only realized about death at 26. But prior to that my experience with it had been so limited that death wasn't something that I thought about at all really. My injury and then some subsequent very serious health issues related to it had me thinking about death some. But mostly it was thoughts about my own mortality, not others. But once I started contemplating the mortality of those I loved, it scared me much more, made me far more disturbed than any the thoughts about myself did.

Every loss has its own emotions and meanings attached to it for me. The loss of this family friend is particularly difficult because this is maybe the first time that somebody I have known my whole life has died. That is not entirely true. I grew up in a very small town. There are many people I have known my whole life. And many of them have died. But this family friend was different. I literally grew up with her daughters, something else that is bringing up a lot of emotions for me. My parents became friends with her and her husband before I was born. We camped with them in the summer, I went to birthday parties and sleep overs at their house. She taught me to ride a horse and was the leader of the girl guide group I belonged to. Her and her husband are close to the age of my parents. Besides their twin daughters being my age, they also have grandchildren the age of my youngest nieces and nephews. It is difficult not to look at this family and not see a sort of mirror image of my own family.

My heart is breaking for this family. Even if I have not really been in touch with any of them for a few years except vicariously through my parents, I have known them so long they feel like family to me. Her death was completely unexpected. They are devastated. But I think there is some solace. She got the chance to see her daughters grow into women, finish college, and start their own families. She got the chance to know her grandchildren who really were the light of her life. She was a life long, well loved member of the community active in many different things from girl guides to the food bank. The hundreds of people at her funeral, in a town of less than 1000, speaks to how many lives she impacted.

Something that makes me smile, she spent her last day alive doing what she loved best, riding her horses out in the country. She put them back in the barn, brushed and fed them then went for a walk down a beautiful trail on her family's land. It winds through a meadow in the shadow of a mountain and then cuts through the forest. She took care of her beloved horses, took a walk here and then she was gone. I feel so sad that she never got to say goodbye to those she loved but I think her last hours must have been happy and peaceful and I hope that thought will help ease some of her family's pain.

I feel a lot of sadness for my parents, especially my mother. I think it must be very hard to lose someone you have been friends with for 35 years. Someone whose life followed your own through young motherhood to being a grandmother. I wish I could say something to her because I know she is hurting. But I don't know what to say. I am always so bad at knowing what to say to people in pain. My dad took this lady's husband for a long drive this morning. He is struggling with this in his own way. But my dad is more of a closed book than my mom, he doesn't talk about things. But behind his silence he seems very shaken and this is one of the very few times in my entire life I can say my dad seems vulnerable. Usually he is a rock. In more ways than one.

One thing this loss has made me realize is that I don't tell the people I care about nearly enough how much they mean to me, how much I love them. Especially my parents.

It's getting to be a problem...

I found myself drinking in a bar last night. Again. The second time in as many nights. Last night it was a pint of raspberry Ale at the "Hose and Hound" after attending a book launch by a member of my old writing group. I have never been to the Hose and the Hound and I must say it was "interesting" to say the least. Some pictures forthcoming.

I reconnected with my writing group about a month ago when I went to a literary magazine launch where some of them were doing a public reading as winners of a writing contest that served as the material for the first issue. I haven't been involved with the group since I got hurt but am still on the emailing list and occasionally touch base with some of them. 3.5 years ago they were just a group of people meeting in the basement of the downtown branch of the public library once a week and bashing each others writing for sport. Besides the guy who leads the group, only one or two had been published in small, unknown publications.

Fast forward to now and 3 of them have since published books, 1 more has a section in an anthology coming out, 1 has quit his teaching job because he is making enough money writing, and there have been a plethora of publications in journals, magazines, etc. Also several have won some serious writing prizes. I am more than a little amazed and actually very intimidated in their presence. I may rejoin the group if the logistics can be worked out. They have moved from the library (very accessible for me but not very conducive to writing) to their very own room in the Alexandra Writing Centre--something that won't mean much to anybody not connected with the Calgary writing scene but is actually a very big move up. However the writing centre is housed in 1903 building that is not at all accessible and not required to be as it falls under the "heritage building" exemption. Which brings out mixed feelings in me as I understand the desire to protect these historically significant buildings. But part of me wonders if it would be so hard to run a ramp off of one door.

The person who runs the group, a former creative writing prof of mine, is looking into what he can arrange to help me rejoin the group. I am not fully sold on rejoining yet but looking at the amazing work this group has done over the past few years, part of me wonders if I can afford to give up this opportunity. We'll see...

I haven't been writing much on here lately. Still feeling very run down physically and trying to get caught up on rest. Mixed success with that. My eye is healing up very well. It's been a much easier process this time around. Still not fully up to speed yet as eye fatigue seems to be a problem limiting the amount of time I have been on my laptop. But so far so good.

Today's project is to have another go with a small herb garden. Also to plant a chia hippo. And maybe even another planting for Wulfric the chia guy. My nephew is coming over in about an hour.

Thanks for the emails and messages about my second eye surgery. It went well. Better than the first. As with the first eye my vision is fluctuating but it doesn't seem as bad as this time. But I have been pretty tired. The surgery took a lot out of me and the complicated eye drop schedule for the first week has thrown everything else off track it seems. Probably I am also really tired from all the stuff of this past month. The trip to Jasper, 2 concerts, a movie, the casino. I am pretty worn down physically. Emotionally lots is going on too and my ability to cope with it all hasn't been the best. I went outside for a bit today. It was sunny when I went out but within 5 minutes the gray clouds rolled in and it started to rain. Like a sign from above...

Eye surgery went good. I am at home.
I haven't had the chance to write for a few days. Not much going on. I went to a movie the other night (Tuesday maybe? I have already forgotten). It went okay. I have only been to a couple movies since I have been hurt and they have all been disasters. So what possessed me to go to one the other night, I am not sure. Well actually I do, I needed to get out of my apartment because my nurse was making me crazy. Anyways I was not so enamoured of the experience that I will be going to another movie soon but I might go more often than I have been. Appparently Tuesday night is the night go because the theatre was virtually empty. We saw Earth on the IMAX screen. Not sure if was worth the extra $3 to watch it on IMAX as opposed to the normal screen where it was also showing. But the IMAX screening was the only option in terms of time once we got there. I had never heard of this movie before but our choices were limited that late (almost 10 pm) between Earth and 17 again. Earth was a better choice. It's a Disney nature documentary filled with adorable beyond words fluffy baby polar bears and time exposed shots of flowers blooming over the span of a few seconds. Not bad. But also scenes of animals attacking and eating each other and others starving to death (including the father of the cute baby polar bears). Not really a good choice for little kids (we had none with us). But worth a watch.

I am leaving very shortly for my second eye surgery. I have to be there very early. I know what to expect this time so it should be less stressful. I will also be having my other eye checked today. It seems to have healed up very well from the post-surgery infection that came from the problem with the dislodged suture. I think the vision in that eye has stabilized now as I haven't noticed my vision fluctuating for the past few days. So maybe today I can get some kind of idea of what the actual correction from the surgery was. I am seeing pretty good out of that eye. Not perfect but enough that I can read and watch tv without glasses or contacts, although my eye seems to get very tired and sore quicker than usual. So things are still not ideal with it. But that's okay. I am still very happy with the results so far. I will be very nice to have the second one done. I'll try to see about somebody posting an update later today but I am expecting the surgery to be uneventful. I am not freaking out this time. Well at least not as much.

I went to the Leonard Cohen concert last night. I wasn't expected to but then two tickets in the wheelchair seating area were given to me. Thanks very much DJ. This was back to back concerts since Saturday I had been out to see the Weakerthans. I am pretty worn down today but it was a wonderful show. My favorite song of the night was "Closing Time." I tried to post this yesterday but couldn't get it to work. He brought the house down last night with this:

Thank you for those who have commented on here or by email about my posts about Brent. I was unsure that I should write about him. I appreciate very much those who have written back.

I haven't posted the pictures of Jasper yet but I will when I have more energy to go through the pictures. For those who have indicated they would like to come and explore Banff and Jasper, I hope you will some day. Especially those from Oregon, as you are not really all that so far away :)

On this week's agenda is my second eye surgery which is scheduled for Thursday. I am still waiting to find out what my vision in the first eye is going to turn out as. So far my vision seems to be pretty good but I have really been bothered by glare (still wearing the giant solar shield sunglasses unfortunately, which my nephew Spencer is convinced are x-vision glasses) and my eye fatigues very quickly. But the earlier problems did resolve themselves with time so I just need to be patient. I have been happy enough with the results to go ahead with the second eye. I have not been allowed to wear a contact lens in the uncorrected eye for the past two weeks, as per the pre-surgery instructions. So pretty much I have been going around blind in that eye as my coke bottle lensed glasses don't work with the other corrected eye anymore. It was very disorienting but eventually I got used to it. But it will be very nice to see out of both eyes again and have them working in sync.

I guess that is all for now. Oh and we went to the concert in a full blown blizzard. A "can't see the car in front of you on the road" type of blizzard. I think at one point it was even hailing which was crazy. I have come to the conclusion that winter is not going to end in Calgary this year. It is just going to continue on until next November or whatever.

After writing that we weren't seeing much of Jasper we took a trip to Maligne Canyon yesterday evening.  The park guide said the first 4 km of the trail were paved and fully accessible but cautioned the trail was "very steep in places." The guide wasn't lying. I wasn't all that comfortable I have to admit and thought about turning around a few times. And at the end I had to go across a bridge that I wasn't all that eager to cross. But the effort was worth it as this was the view I got.

Jasper National Park is one of 5 of the "Rocky Mountain National Parks." Four of these parks are actually physically connected and in effect create one giant national park that straddles the border of Alberta and British Columbia. Banff and Jasper are in Alberta and Yoho and Kootney National Parks are on the BC side. Jasper is the most northern of these parks. The 5th park is Waterton Lakes National Park located off by itself in Southern Alberta where also creates a large contiguous area physically bordering with Glacier National Park in Montana. I have visited all these parks and it is hard to say which one is the most beautiful as they all have unique features and are so different. But this view had me thinking that, at least for today, Jasper is my favorite. Taken on the road to Maligne Canyon.

We had some technical difficulties earlier trying to post pictures. Here are a few. I am working on adding to the thread and posting it as I add more shots so check back to it later.

The main room of our cabin. Picture taken before my nephew arrived. Pretty much it now looks like the Tasmanian Devil whorled through.

The Queen's cabin. Very close to our cabin which is a slightly smaller version of this cabin and pretty much looks the same. I told you it was ostentatious!

Tuesday part 2

Yay I got some pictures. And my sister in law has been helping me crop and resize because the feature for that on blogger has gone all haywire on me. So thanks to her for that.

1. As promised the Queen's cabin which is very close to our cabin. I posted on the weekend about the golf course and the large amount of unusually green grass (for this time of year) I observed at certain non golf course places around the lodge property. Well here is one perfect example. The grass by this cottage is suspiciously far greener than the grass around the cheaper priced cabins. Could be just due to location. But I don't think so. Not that it matters but I just find it funny. I don't have an exterior shot of our cabin with this group of photos but our cabin essentially looks the same, just slightly smaller. I don't know that I want to post it because I admit it makes me feel a little embarrassed how big it is. Definately a step up from the last time I stayed in Jasper which was when my friend Dena and I came to hike and spent 2 nights at the Jasper International Hostel. We paid $13 a night to stay in a 28 person dorm. (I should say that it was probably the cleanest hostel I have ever stayed at and was the only place within the park that fit our student budgets so I am not complaining).
I posted last night but when I tried to edit to put a picture in the post is gone :( I may have deleted by accident.

It is our last full day here. 4 nights doesn't seem enough but unfortunately everybody (except me apparently) has lives and jobs to get back to. We will be leaving sometime tomorrow and heading home through Banff. While I am tempted to spend tomorrow night in Lake Louise, as I said, everybody but me has to get back to Calgary. I just found out that the Columbia Icefields glacier tours are fully accessible. Which really surprised me but apparently it is true. This opened up the possibility of stopping there tomorrow if we left earlier enough since it is on the way. But after thinking it over I realized that the Icefields are close enough to Calgary that a trip out there could be done in one day. Jasper, while it isn't really all that far from Calgary relatively speaking, isn't a day trip. At least not for me. And so we are going to spend the morning poking around Jasper and then just drive straight to Calgary. Although my common sense tells me if I was going to do the glacier now is the time before the crowds start. However I am getting enough of the staring at treatment here that I am not so sure I want to go become a spectacle on a glacier. Yes I am too sensitive but there are times I don't handle it well. Today is one of those days when I just would rather drop down a giant rabbit hole that go out as I am.

Anyways enough of the self-pity for now. My sister in law and nephew arrived yesterday to spend the final two nights of our trip with us which has been very nice. My cousin drove them and spent the night then went back and then they will come home with us. And here I was wondering what we would do with all the bedrooms we had. They have all been filled up nicely in fact. We went to the pool so my nephew could burn off some of his energy (he is 2 and a half...enough said). The outdoor pool is heated so is open all year round. It is gorgeous and fully accessible with a wheelchair ramp leading right from the change room into the pool. There is also an indoor pool although I haven't seen it yet. Anyways a very nice pool attendant came over and told me they had a chair that I could use if I wanted t o go in the pool. This got my nephew all excited because he thought I could go swimming with him. It was pretty upsetting for me when I told him I couldn't and he kept repeating "please come." I would have loved to just to make him happy. Unfortunately there was no way to accommodate the ventilator. In the past I have gone in a pool during physical therapy sessions but of course not thinking that there would be a pool here I could conceivably use quite easily, we didn't think of it. I say that somewhat wistfully because I don't know that even if it had been possible it I would have been comfortable going in the water. This is the first time my nephew (this particular one) has specifically asked me to do something with him that I haven't been able to. In the end it was no big deal to him because another lodge employee presented him with a toy boat and he promptly forgot all about me once he got it in his hands. But it bothered me. And still is bothering me.

We haven't left the lodge properly much to explore as we thought we might. Besides the fact that it is so nice here, I have been very tired and not much up to exploring. The road trip took a lot out of me and so I have been taking it easy for the most part. I thought maybe that would ruin the trip somewhat as we came to see Jasper National Park and are really only seeing one very small slice of it. But everybody else seems content to just hang around here. I admit that finding out that things had gone downhill so quickly for Brent has taken away something from this trip. I know it does no good to think this way because there is absolutely no connection between the two things but I was almost feeling like going on a trip like this seems so pointless in the big picture of things. Having my nephew here who is just a few months older than Brent also had me thinking about a number of things. My sister in law is currently fighting her own very difficult battle with cancer and so there are many different emotions. I was so happy she was able to come to Jasper for at least part of the stay.

Some pictures maybe later today. Nobody has taken them off their cameras for me yet.
